Awakened Schools: A Journey into Transcendent Education

Elaine Robinson, Principal

I was fortunate recently to attend the Awakened Schools Institute convened by Collaborative for Spiritual Education at Columbia University.  This programme was inspired by the work of Dr Miller in her published research the Awakened Brain.

Exploring The Awakened Brain

The "Awakened Brain" explores the relationship between spirituality, mental health, and neuroscience. In her book, she discusses how spirituality and a sense of connection can enhance emotional well-being and resilience. Through her studies, she demonstrates that individuals with a strong spiritual life often experience lower rates of depression and other mental health issues. Her work merges scientific enquiry with the benefits of spiritual practices, emphasizing the role of spirituality in fostering a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Education and Transcendence

The relationship between this research and education is incredibly profound. Education is not just about imparting academic knowledge; it involves nurturing the whole person. Lisa Miller's research introduces the concept of Awakened Schools where transcendence, interconnectedness, and service form the foundation of the educational experience.

Implementing the Awakened Schools Framework at SMMIS

The 12 drivers outlined by the Collaborative for Spiritual Education create a framework that guides schools towards a holistic, spiritually aware approach to teaching and learning.
At SMMIS we hold these drivers dear to our hearts in our interactions with our students, parents and staff.

1. Transcendent Practice

Awakened Schools cultivate practices that nurture a heightened awareness. This includes meditation, mindfulness, or other methods that elevate students and staff beyond the mundane.

2. Intentional Lexicon

A common language rooted in interconnectedness, transcendence, and service helps align the school's community. This shared vocabulary fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose.

3. Transformative Relationships

Student-teacher relationships are built on connection and love. These relationships are essential for fostering a supportive and caring environment conducive to personal growth.

4. Integrated Mission

The school's mission is vertically integrated, meaning that it is deeply embedded in every aspect of SMMIS school life, from policies to daily interactions.

5. Aspirational Values

Holding aspirational goals both inside and outside of the classroom encourages students and staff to strive for excellence in all they do.

6. Meaningful Learning

Awakened Schools connect knowledge and service by linking classroom learning to real-world applications and community engagement

7. Nature Consciousness

Students and staff are given opportunities to form deep relationships with nature and all living things, fostering a sense of respect and interconnectedness.

8. Ritual

Community identity and belonging are promoted through rituals and celebrations that acknowledge and honour the diverse backgrounds of staff and students.

9. Inherent Worth

Every member of the school community is seen, known, valued, and appreciated for their unique spirit and potential.

10. Authorised Keeper

An appointed professional embodies and expresses the core values of the school, acting as a guide and mentor for the community.

11. Spiritual Quest

Educators are invited to embark on their own spiritual journey in a way that is inclusive and non-coercive, enriching their own understanding and that of their students.

12. Multiple Epistemologies

Awakened Schools embrace various ways of knowing, including intuition, mystical awareness, and empirical reasoning. This diverse approach fosters a richer learning experience.

The Path to Transcendent Education

Lisa Miller's research and the 12 Drivers of Awakened Schools present a transformative approach to education. By fostering transcendent practices and promoting interconnectedness, these schools prepare students not only for academic success but for a life of meaning and purpose. Through this journey, educators and students alike find a more profound sense of community, belonging, and spiritual growth.

Positive Impact of the 12 Drivers in Awakened Schools

The positive impact of the 12 drivers in Awakened Schools is transformative for both students and educators. By fostering a sense of interconnectedness, transcendence, and service, these schools create a nurturing environment where individuals feel seen and valued.

Students experience deeper learning through meaningful engagement with their surroundings and communities, leading to personal growth and self-discovery. Educators benefit from strong relationships with students and peers, contributing to a supportive atmosphere that encourages professional and spiritual development.

Overall, Awakened Schools promote holistic well-being and prepare students for a life of purpose and fulfilment.

This 10 week programme gathered educators from around the world to share experiences and learn from each other. We unpicked the 12 Drivers and shared with each other how we have introduced these into each of our schools.

This is a very exciting journey, and I want to share the good news.

Transformative relationships

With the existing culture we have established for an international school in Singapore like SMMIS, accompanied by the 12 drivers of Awakened Schools, we aim to fulfil a holistic academic curriculum for our students. They can expect to develop wholesomely and accomplish what they set out to do. These are counterparts of the framework we want to instil in our students to guide them along the right, and meaningful educational path. We are committed to building a strong community and aim towards making the world a better place..
